Coldwater fish are considered the 'traditional' fish to keep in the home aquarium. In fact this is where the hobby started some 1700 years ago, with the Chinese keeping Goldfish.
Since then the humble Goldfish has undergone continual selective breeding to create the many strains available today, some of which are listed below. Because they are all the same species (Carassius auratus) they all require similar conditions, excellent water quality being one, to ensure that good condition is maintained.
 |
| The Lionhead (Carassius auratus), size variable. Best kept inside in an aquarium. Has a raspberry-like growth (wen) on top of its head. |
 | | The Red Cap Oranda (Carassius auratus), size variable. Best kept inside in an aquarium. This one also has a growth (wen) on top of its head, more pronounced due to its colouration. |
 | | The Celestial (Carassius auratus), size variable. Best kept inside in an aquarium. The unusual eyes and lack of dorsal fin make this fish quite unique. |
 | | The Black Moor (Carassius auratus), size variable. Best kept inside in an aquarium. Show specimens are bred to be perfectly black, any colour deviation incurring penalties. |
 | | The Pearlscale (Carassius auratus), size variable. Best kept inside in an aquarium. Each scale of this fish is slightly raised and white or pearlescent, hence the name. |
 | | The Oranda (Carassius auratus), size variable. Best kept inside in an aquarium. The same as the red cap but a different colour strain. Pronounced scales. |
 | | The Bubble-eye (Carassius auratus), size variable. Best kept inside in an aquarium. Perhaps the most peculiar looking of these fish, it has fluid-filled sacs beneath its eyes. |
